SINGAPORE – Maya Gallery is pleased to present A Tribute to Local Clay: A Pottery Exhibition. Showcasing the works of Hazel Ng, Suriani Suratman, Sutopo Ngasiman, Hiroko Mita and Hetty Lie Schricke, the exhibition draws us back to the very fundamental tradition of art making – using the materials available from the area in which the artist lives or works.  Most importantly Singapore’s variety of clays have formed the character of the created shapes and textures achieved by these potters. Hence the works bring us to the always renewed wonder of transformation of earth to pottery.

More than 100 ceramic works will be showcased, including those of Guest Artist, Mr. Iskandar Jalil.

All five potters have been under the tutelage of Mr. Iskandar Jalil, master potter and Cultural Medallion recipient. Using of local clays has an element of Singapore heritage; local potters in the past used local clays in their craft. Pottery practices of potters in this exhibition are a manifestation of living heritage, where local clay has been used in various ways in their works to depict each individual identity. These contemporary pieces provide the public an opportunity to learn about, and appreciate, the diverse forms that pottery can take.

Tribute to Local Clay, which runs till 31 January 2015, is an opportunity for the public to learn and appreciate 3-dimensional visual arts through pottery.
