Sambal Goreng: Celebrating Hari Raya & our 7th Anniversary

June 1 – 10, 2019

Sambal Goreng | Celebrating Hari Raya & Maya Gallery's 7th Anniversary

SINGAPORE – Maya Gallery is pleased to present “Sambal Goreng” from 1 to 10 June, 2019, at The Art Space by Natalie Wong at Kallang Leisure Park.

Sambal goreng is a favourite Malay dish served during Hari Raya, made up of various ingredients like assorted meat, prawn, tauhu (tofu or bean curd) and tempe (soy bean cake).

Named Sambal Goreng, this exhibition presents a strong selection of artworks by prominent Singaporean artists in various mediums and styles. It aims to capture the spirit of Hari Raya and share the rich Malay heritage, thus encouraging cross-cultural and inter-faith understanding.

In a multiracial and multi-religious society like Singapore where people of diverse cultures, languages and faiths live harmoniously, communicate and work together, and have respect for each other's distinct customs, traditions and heritage, visual artists play an important role in creatively contributing to the development and well-being of our society. French author André Maurois said, "Art is an effort to create, beside the real world, a more humane world."

Apart from the exhibition, there will be an art talk and community art activity, to foster communication between cultures and faiths. Viewers and participants will have an intimate view into a faith that promotes peace and embraces diversity, and appreciate the social harmony that we proudly uphold.

As a local home-grown art gallery, Maya Gallery aims to give a voice to contemporary art with a focus on heritage and culture. It has held more than 60 exhibitions locally and overseas by more than 100 Singaporean and international artists, hosted art workshops, talks, book clubs and film screenings, and designed and published exhibition catalogues. The gallery has, in the space of seven years, contributed strongly to the development of the contemporary art scene in Singapore.

We hope that you will visit the show. Wishing you Ramadan Kareem or Selamat Berpuasa, and Eid Mubarak or Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
