PAINTING HOME

What do you call a Singaporean of Javanese descent who excels in Chinese ink? Ironic? Iconic? Rojak? Actually you could call it all of the above, but his name is Sunar Sugiyou. We had the pleasure of meeting him at his exhibition at The Fullerton Heritage hotel in July, presented by Maya Gallery, called simply 'Home'.

Maya Gallery is pleased to present Home’, a solo exhibition by third generation Singapore artist Sunar Sugiyou at the Fullerton Hotel, Singapore. The exhibition is on view from July 5, through September 12, 2013. With mastery in the art of Chinese brush painting, Sunar Sugiyou captures old Singapore landscapes and memories that engage the viewer to revisit one’s past, familiar places, our heritage, and concepts of what binds us as a family and nation. Part of the proceeds from the sale of artworks will contribute to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) Needy Patients Fund.

ART GALLERY OPENS IN KAMPONG GLAM

A NEW GALLERY has opened in the heritage district of Kampong Gelam, Singapore last April. Maya Gallery, housed in a 2-storey conservation shophouse, is conveniently located in a tourist belt close to Sultan Mosque and Raffles Hotel, and surrounded by cafes and restaurants offering a wide range of international cuisine.

Its opening exhibition ‘from the heart’ features works by Singaporean artists Sujak Rahman, Sunar Sugiyou, Charlotte Tan, and Jeffrey Wandly. Also included is a special collection of hand-crafted collectible pinhole cameras by Karto, and ceramics by ISKANDAR JALIL.The event was attended by close to 200 guests.
