"The basic element of every culture is ART." - David Dory

I take great pleasure in celebrating with Maya Gallery on their first anniversary, and launch of their exhibition, éncore!. The first twelve months in business is usually the most challenging, and I am heartened to know that local businesses like Maya Gallery, an art gallery which promotes Singaporean artists, is working very hard to mark their blueprint in the arts industry.

Their story is quite unique – Jeffrey and his wife Masturah are both educated professionals in their respective fields. Jeffrey is an architect, and project management and development consultant, a recipient of the MENDAKI Excellence Award (1993) and Anggulia Scholarship (Architecture), an artist, and also manages an orchestra. Masturah is a graphic design consultant who once designed for government events and initiatives, and is still assisting various MNCs and SMEs with their branding and design communication needs. She has her own line of invitation card designs, and also illustrates and designs books.

Both with an innate passion for the arts at a young age. Both born to parents who contributed to the local arts scene. Both leaving their comfort zone to market our Singaporean artists to the international arena. And at the same time, having a social responsibility through bringing art programmes closer to the community, and partnering with various organisations in art events and auctions with a charity component.

Theirs is an inspiring story – from a shared passion, Maya Gallery has made a name for itself, having in its register several established, even pioneer and emerging Singaporean artists, as well as artists from the region to as far as the US and Latin America. And I know these are but part of their many dreams to make it in the ever-changing art industry.

The opening of the National Art Gallery (NAGA) in 2015, with the building up of the Singapore and Southeast Asian Permanent Collections is a reflection of the government’s commitment in supporting our local talents. The role of artists is instrumental in the documenting of our nation’s history, and shaping of our national culture and identity.

Our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said this when he opened the School of the Arts (SOTA) in 2011, “The Arts add to our economy and our society in many different ways. A vibrant arts scene will make us a leading art capital of Asia, a cultural capital of Asia.”

Let us support young and upcoming local art galleries like Maya Gallery, which has a lot of potential and drive, to help Singapore build a vibrant nation. Henry Matisse said, “Creativity takes courage”. We thank Jeffrey and Masturah for their courage and perseverance to excel in this field, and wish them and their artists the best in many more years to come.
