John Wong

1943 , Malaysia

After receiving a Diploma in Graphic Arts from the South Australian School of Arts in 1970, John Wong (b. 1944, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) worked for a few years as an Illustrator for advertising companies in the Automotive Industry in Australia. He then returned to his home town of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where he was first Arts Director and the Creative Director for the Advertising Firm IAP and KACE. In the 1980’s he founded and helmed Wishwell, a Malaysian homegrown greeting cards company which had designs based on Malaysian scenes and characters he himself illustrated.

Outside of his corporate life, John Wong was active in the fine arts; creating drawings and paintings connected to Malaysiana. His keen passion for and study of Malaysian Anthropology is reflected in his art works which include Malaysian Birds, Kampung houses, and scenes from his own memories of Malaysian culture. He works with acrylic, water colour, pen and ink.
