Not Canon, Nikon but Karto

By Haryani Ismail

ARE the Japanese and the West the only ones who can design cameras, whereas the Malays just love taking photographs?

This question has been on the mind of Mr Khamis Arifin, or Karto as he is fondly called, after pursuing wedding and commercial photography since the 1970s.

Though his first camera, a 4x5 format in the form of an accordian, took a year – between 1992 and 1993 – to prepare, this spurred him further to create more pinhole cameras.

His hand crafted cameras are functional and can be customised to the clients' needs, making them very popular amongst his fans here and abroad.

It has also become a tool of reference for students and enthusiasts who wish to learn more about camera basics.

Even a camera that has been framed becomes art for the wals, and this has been acquired by a museum in Italy for 10,000 euros (S$16, 215).

Neverthess, Karto, 66 years, humbly says: "It all started with a passion, and I am willing to share my skills to anyone who is interested to design a camera such as this. The photos turn out like art."

Karto's creations are one of the art works exhibited at the Our Pioneer Artists exhibition, organised by Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya (APAD) or the Association of Artists with Various Resources, from 2 till 6 March.
