Heiko Schulze

1957 , Germany

Heiko Schulze began his exploration into sculptural works in 2015. Having spent years working with the German Embassy Singapore’s Cultural Department, his interest in artistic self-expression grew. He began honing his skills in woodwork when he joined his wife, ceramic artist Suriani Suratman, in her studio, designing and building boxes (or “homes”) for her works. Inspired by an Alexander Calder exhibition in Berlin, Heiko started experimenting with his own kinetic sculptures. His standing mobiles have been featured at the annual Singapore Clay Festival since 2022. He participated in his first group exhibition, Small Matter 2024, at Maya Gallery.

Artist Statement

"Sail! is inspired by the proverb: "About the wind we cannot determine, but we can direct the sails”. While we may not be able to control external circumstances, we can still influence our response to them by adjusting our perspective. The wind signifies the uncontrollable forces in our lives while the sails represent our ability to adapt our actions. This kinetic sculpture is assembled with driftwood, a material that is uniquely shaped by the forces of the sea. The pieces are mobile and stirred by the currents of air. In this dynamic play between unpredictability and order, Sail! invites the viewer to reflect on our limits of control and our responses to navigate modern life’s currents in accord with the natural surroundings."
