Maya Gallery kicks off its first exhibition, 'Reflection', on 8 May 2021 at its new gallery space!
The gallery started in Kampong Glam in 2012. It later moved to Ubi in 2015, and once again settled down in a bigger premise on the fifth floor of 57 Genting Lane in April this year.
'Reflection' marks the month of Ramadan, celebrated by Muslims all over the world. A period of fasting with steadfastness, it is a time to renew one's faith, reflect on one's actions and recollect memories of loved ones. Denoting values of peace, kindness, patience and love, Ramadan reminds us to share joy and inspirations especially during difficult times like the pandemic.
The exhibition also welcomed the month of Syawal, celebrating the end of the month-long fast. Known as Eid or Hari Raya Puasa, this holiday is marked with gratitude and strengthening of bonds amongst family and friends.
A visual celebration through the eyes of various artists, 'Reflection' presents fine work incorporating Islamic calligraphy, mosques, local landscapes and abstract expressions across various mediums like oil, acrylic, watercolour, batik, photography, ceramics and mixed media.
Artists include Cultural Medallion recipient Sarkasi Said, Suriani Suratman, Idris Ali, Valerie Ng, Jaleela Niaz, Mohd Samad Afandie, Mohammad Tirani, Terence Tan and gallery owners Jeffrey Wandly and Masturah Sha'ari.
Hoping to shine a light amidst the dark and arduous journey for many, 'Reflection' will run from 8 to 28 May 2021.
UPDATE: Due to restrictions of Phase Two (Heightened Alert), the exhibition has been extended till 28 June 2021.
