Midah Arshad, a Singaporean-Malay born practising visual artist. Currently based in Singapore, she holds a degree in Fine Art Painting from Lasalle-SIA College of the Arts, South-east Asia's foremost art institute.

Midah’s career focused on architecture until she moved to Hong Kong. It was at this point in her life that she began to paint once again and enrolled in the Fine Arts degree programme offered by RMIT University in Hong Kong. The theme of her paintings were initially inspired by her childhood experiences. Her paintings were an expression of her formative years, living in the village in Singapore before the rapid quest of modernization took the country by storm in the late 80s.

Midah’s paintings are inspired by life experiences, memory mixed with free flow imagination. The paintings are often based on sketches from her mind’s eye and not only reflect the soul of the place, but her emotional responses of having lived those moments as well. To put it succinctly, Midah’s paintings are about sensation and feelings. The colours she delicately selects are not a reflection of actual colours, but an expression of her response to her feelings. Colour is a medium to depict how she remembers the experience emotionally. Her swift brushstrokes style in acrylic aims to express the power of nature and perception in its evolution, ever changing contrast, harmony and discord.

Artist Statement
Man’s effect on landscape, through mining, farming and worship is changing the landscape beneath our feet. With that it creates the sense of urgency that I try and document my travels by creating art that displays the awesome powers of the earth at that moment in time. Tapping into the richness that nature provides, elements from inspirations such as ancient civilizations, cycles of nature, the ocean, plants, symbols, systems, mechanics, and icons combine to call attention to my findings about our past, present and future. My rough style and obscure subject communicates a sense of wonder, experimentation, discovery and balance. Sweeping, curving lines reflecting the energy and power of Nature whilst the colours do not reflect the actual colours of a place, it is instead my responses to it.
